This dashboard provides an overview of Japan-related sessions at the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) conference, spanning 1995-2025. It summarizes key statistics and links to six detailed interactive visualizations exploring topics, institutions, presenter careers, co-paneling networks, panel themes, and geographic distribution.

Data Sources

Conference data was assembled from multiple harvesting pipelines specific to each conference. Cross-referencing against the broader Japanese Literary Studies database identifies 99.0% of presenters as known scholars in the field.

Topic Extraction

Topics are extracted from paper and session titles using four keyword dictionaries: literary figures (~45 authors with romanization variants), historical periods (7 eras), genres (9 categories), and themes (15 categories). Matching uses word-boundary regex with Unicode diacritics flattening.
